Nuu-chah-nulth nations have entered into negotiations with the British Columbia government and Canadian government over land claims and rights to traditional territories. There are also currently 14 Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations divided into three regions: the Southern Region ( Ditidaht, Huu-ay-aht, Hupacasath, Tse-shaht, Uchucklesaht) the Central Region ( Ahousaht, Hesquiaht, Tla-o-qui-aht, Toquaht, Ucluelet) and the Northern Region ( Ehattesaht, Kyuquot/Checleseht, Mowachat/Muchalaht and Nuchatlaht).Īlthough the Nuu-chah-nulth did not surrender their land on Vancouver Island, the Canadian government created small reserves for them in that area in the late 19th century.Ĭurtailment of hunting and fishing, including prohibition of the vital salmon weir traps, deprived the Nuu-chah-nulth of their traditionally rich economic base. Today, the ha’houlthee of the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations stretches approximately 300 km of Vancouver Island’s Pacific Coast,įrom Brooks Peninsula in the north to Point-no-Point in the south, and includes inland regions. Each group also lived off the resources provided within their ha’houlthee (chiefly territories). Each nation included several local groups, led by a ha’wiih (hereditary chief). Languages and aspects of culture, they were divided into chiefly families or nations. Although the Nuu-chah-nulth shared traditions, When Captain James Cook first met some Nuu-chah-nulth peoples in 1778, he mistakenly assumed that they were all part of the same tribe. From rolling open sea to green glass channels the water is sure to keep you taking photos and the sharp hills that surround the waters are green and lush. Dayle (I'm not sure of her title) is one of the most organised women that I have ever encountered and she strives to make every moment of your trip memorable. Want wine with dinner? It's already at your table. Need a thermos of coffee for the boat? It's already packed. Those men and women have thought of everything. The food is 5 star, the rooms are beautiful and the staff is so on point that you will never want for anything. I know that he said that he was looking to retire but if you ask for him, and get him, he'll make your whole trip. In the lulls between catching a lot of fish he would diligently work the lines and lures and maintain easy and interesting conversation with us. Brent was not only a great guide but he was also great company. I was lucky enough to bring in a 25 lbs Spring Salmon and I will never forget that experience. He taught us how to reel in the big ones and took us to every spot where we found them. The fishing was incredible!! Our guide Brent was fantastic! He kept an immaculate boat that was super clean and very well equipped. We recently visited NSR for 4 days and 3 nights of fishing, dinning and stunning views. Can't say enough about how much fun we had - a huge shout out to all the employees who made our trip so darn memorable - THANKS.… We also had fun with picking from a huge assortment of lunch items, to pack up and take out on the water. I don't mean large portions of your every day food fare.We got to enjoy a true artist at work - the food was amazing. Chef Josh and staff know how to lay out a meal!! NOTE: Fish hard and come back HUNGRY! Each course, every night was something to ponder upon while out on water, waiting to reel in the next big one. PS- don't bother bringing rain gear, they provide you HH. The boats are terrific and come with all your basic fishing needs. We booked a guided trip (to get the lay of the waters), as well as renting one of their boats. Maybe stayed up a little too late, glued to the pool table for a night of fun and libations - but that just adds to the challenge of chasing after those early AM fish. Sleeping on the water is just special and the beds are comfy. The facilities were well equipped & super clean. Everyone was so nice, accommodating and knowledgeable. We love to fish and this was our first experience with being "spoiled" while vacation-fishing. Took our son for a college graduation adventure trip and it was amazing.
